Green Thumb Challenge Kick-off in the Hill

Green Thumb Community Challenge

New Haven Farms is launching the Green Thumb Community Challenge with New Haven partners through the Conference of Mayors Award to support childhood obesity prevention initiatives. Through August and September, we aim to celebrate and support community members growing their own food by providing four celebrations in Fair Haven and the Hill neighborhoods.  Cooking demonstrations, shared meals, gardening and composting tips, and prizes are all planned for these family-friendly, fun events.

Neighbors and new friends are invited to kick-off events Monday, July 27th, from 5:30-7:30pm at 62 Truman Street, and Saturday, August 1st, from 10:00am-12:00pm at 613 Ferry Street.  Co-sponsors include the City of New Haven, the City’s Community Services Administration, Cooking Matters, the New Haven Land Trust, and the Truman Street Community Garden.

We’re also launching a social media campaign with #GTCNHV to celebrate and showcase what’s growing across New Haven.  Post your pictures with the hashtag #GTCNHV and follow New Haven Farms for updates.

Inspired by our Farm-Based Wellness Program participants growing their own food in our Gardener Incubator Program with the New Haven Land Trust, we are proud to follow what’s growing in New Haven and grateful for leadership from our neighbors, all the way to Mayor Toni Harp.

Help the Green Thumb Community Challenge succeed by sharing pictures, following, and “liking” us on social media; donating to New Haven Farms for our community outreach; or contacting our if you’d like to donate items to support community members who want to grow food in their communities.  We’ll be sure to thank you in September!
