Rock to Rock Rider Spotlight: Karen Nemiah

With five days left until the 10th Annual Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride, New Haven Farms’ Red Beet Riders are set to blow past our fundraising total from last year. This is no small thanks to star team member Karen Nemiah, a returning Red Beet Rider and strong year-round supporter of New Haven Farms.

Karen has spent her life bouncing back and forth between Connecticut and New York City. After working in advertising and marketing – the “Mad Men world,” as she describes it – and raising two veggie-loving children, Karen came to serve as Head of Marketing and Development for our close friends at Fair Haven Community Health Care. Outside of this position, Karen is a board member for and past president of the Cuttyhunk Historical Society and Musem in Cuttyhunk, MA, and gives back to her alma mater, St. Lawrence University, in the form of career mentoring, college admissions, fundraising, and notetaking work. She likes to spend her spare time sailing, skiing, traveling, photographing, reading, cooking, and drinking and laughing with her friends.

Here’s more about the fantastic Karen Nemiah, in her own words:

What do you love about New Haven Farms?

What’s NOT to love about New Haven Farms? I love NHF’s educational and lifestyle approach to accessible food and healthy living. Instead of just giving out vegetables, NHF teaches participants how to grow, prepare and enjoy them AND why this lifestyle is so important to their health. I love that NHF turns blighted, under-appreciated properties into productive sources of neighborhood pride. I love that NHF farms not only shares its produce with participating families, but with the larger community as well, through their CSA. The fact that NHF is part of the extended Fair Haven Community Health Care family and that the NHF staff and board are so passionate about their work is icing on the cake.

What are you most looking forward to about Rock to Rock?

This is our second year riding and I’m looking forward to the event camaraderie and a chance to enjoy a leisurely bike ride through the city. I am also looking forward to warm, sunny weather, in hopes of erasing last year’s memories of grey drizzle!

What do you want to see in a green future for New Haven?

Healthier folks, greener lifestyles, and more green spaces around the city!

Help Karen create sunny weather for this year’s ride by donating on her rider page, and if you haven’t yet, it’s not too late to join our team and ride with us this Saturday, April 28th. See you there!
